World Oceans Day

Educational Opportunity
Megan Leffler

Oceans cover about two-thirds of the Earth's surface and are the true pillar of life. They generate most of the oxygen we breathe, absorb a large amount of carbon emissions, provide food and nutrients, regulate climate, and are economically important to countries that rely on tourism, fishing and other marine resources for their income. Due to this, in December 2008, the United Nations, in its general assembly, decided that June 8 would be World Oceans Day, and since then events are held around the world to raise awareness about the care of our Oceans.

This year, Roatan decided not to stay behind having a day of fun in honor of the Oceans. You will have the opportunity to educate yourself in conservation, restoration and prevention along with reliable organizations that are dedicated to the protection of the reef and the marine life in our Island, you will also have the opportunity to win many prizes such as fun dives, tours, day passes or meals. All funds will be used to purchase materials and continue beach clean ups.
