Utila Lionfish Derby

Competition or Sporting Event

XII Utila Lionfish Derby Logo – XII Utila Lionfish Derby

Currently on its XII edition, the bi-annual Utila Lionfish Derby was created in an effort to promote the island wide education and containment of this invasive species.

The mission is to connect individuals, organizations and businesses through a fun, educational, and healthy competition. By socializing these events we also wish to showcase the camaraderie, gastronomy and beauty of Utila and its inhabitants.

The competition is held over the course of 2 days. During the first day participants will dive far and wide in order to search for and contain as many lionfish as they can. Meanwhile volunteers await to receive the lionfish in order to perform the appropriate dissection and gather as much scientific data from each fish. Lionfish meat is then donated to participant restaurants for them to prepare the delicious meals which are served on day 2 to all the expectant and hungry community attendees.

Finally on that second evening, the winners are announced, including prizes for "Most Lionfish Contained", "Biggest Lionfish", "Most Unusual Lionfish" among others, and of course, "Best Lionfish Dish".

Stay tuned for dates, and schedule your visit to come and help Utila's reefs!
