Roatan Marine Park

The Roatan Marine Park office in West End. – Manlio Martínez

The Roatan Marine Park (RMP) is a non profit NGO, started as a grass roots community based organization in 2005 when a group of concerned divers and business owners came together to take action against the unsustainable development on Roatan. The growth in tourism and lack of infrastructure poses threat to the health of the reef essential to the economy and well being of the island. The RMP began as the Sandy Bay-West End Marine Reserve and today runs the entire way round the island and is also one of the 14 co managers of the National Marine Park of the Bay Islands which consists of Guanaja, Utila, and Roatan.

The RMP aims to save the reef by taking pressure off the reef. Programs include a 24/7 Patrol Program, Education Program reaching over 3,000 kids a year and working alongside private businesses to encourage best practices and sustainability, including the use of paper cups and straws to reduce the use of single use plastic. Our responsible seafood program educates local businesses and consumers of the best practices in fish consumption. Our Community Development and Alternative Livelihood programs empower and inspire the local community to become conservationists of the future. Our invasive species program reduces the amount of lion fish on the reef, a workshop can be taken every Monday and Wednesday at the RMP office Half Moon Bay. By becoming a lion fish hunter you are actively helping us save the reef, reducing invasive species and your single use plastic consumption are vital roles in the action required to help us save the reef. You can shop to support our efforts, become a sponsor or actively fundraise for our conservation efforts. While you are here why not arrange a beach clean up or get in touch to see what volunteer programs are on offer. To find out more, visit our website or get in touch
