Beach Cleanup - Sponsored by Mahogany Bay Cruise Center
Inspired by the Bay Islands Coastal Cleanup (BICCU), a grassroots conservation initiative which began in Roatan a few years back, management from Mahogany Bay Cruise Center (MBCC) have embraced this activity, but have taken it a little bit further by adopting a coastal area near their property to do monthly clean ups and reforestations. The area of Brick Bay on the south side of Roatan was chosen because the currents and landscape cause trash to get trapped in the mangroves and around the local community, creating pockets of trash.
At the end of the month, for one entire morning, staff from either the Maintenance, Beach and Security Departments of MBCC take turns to clean up the area of Brick Bay. Using gloves, bags, rakes and nets they collect literally, hundreds of bags filled with garbage. In addition to the cleanup of Brick Bay which has been taking place every month since December 2014, the staff from MBCC also cleans the mangroves as well as the nearby beaches within their property. Other Community Service programs adopted by MBCC include the planting of mangrove shoots (100 so far) and the building of trash containers from recyclable materials such as tires and bins.
Mahogany Bay has been very active supporting this cause and will continue to do so, for they know they have a responsibility to lead by example and give back to the environment and the community in Roatan!
