Utila Handmade Co-op

The Utila Handmade Co-op opened its doors on April 3, 2017. We began as a cooperative project shop supported by Kanahau, a local conservation NGO.

At Utila Handmade Co-op you will find local art, handcrafts, and natural products for offer to the local community.

We welcome all artists living on the island to showcase and sell their artwork in our shop.

Our aim is to also train Honduran women on how to sustainably create eco-friendly products like  soaps, marmalade, creams, teas, hot sauces, and beauty products. Thus creating more opportunities for them to to make an income and learn how to manage a business.

Utila Handmade is more than just a shop; it is a community facility that also acts as an art studio where anyone can come and make some of these products. We hold workshops for children and other community members to learn how to create new things from nature and particularly recycled rubbish collected from individuals or beach cleanups.

We work with the island's only botanical garden to source naturally occurring resources, which are not currently utilized such as papaya, noni, wild guava, gumbo limbo, to name a few.

Come visit us and enjoy taking home a locally made product as a souvenir!

Actions taken to promote environmental or social sustainability

We focus on creating socioeconomic opportunities by training local women in a craft that will allow them to generate income and sustain their families.

All our products come from nature, and we recycle plastic and other materials to create beautiful and useful art.
