Actions taken to promote environmental or social sustainability
Roatan Backpackers' Hostel is an eco-friendly hostel, with primarily solar energy for the majority of the hostel, and solar hot water.
All guests are reminded of the importance of turning off fans and lights when not in use.
Light bulbs are all LED.
All landscape lighting is solar.
We have a rain-water collecting cistern.
We also recycle, and encourage our guests to separate recyclables.
Linens and towels are only changed out when necessary.
We also routinely participate in beach/community clean ups, and regularly support the non-profit health care clinic nearby, Clinica Esperanza.
For guests who are volunteering somewhere on the island, we donate 10% of the cost of the stay to the non-profit that they're volunteering with.
We are recipients of the TripAdvisor Green Leader award for our environmental efforts.
