Caribbean Cup Freediving Competition

The Caribbean Cup is an international freediving competition where world and national champions from different countries meet in West Bay, Roatan, to compete in different freediving disciplines during one whole week. Athletes try to reach greater depths while holding their breath in three different disciplines Free Immersion (FIM), Constant Weight with Fins (CWT), and Constant Weight Without Fins (CNF).

With air temperature oscillating between 25-30 C / 77-85 F, water temperature at about 27-29 C / 80-84 F, null to moderate currents, and stunning visibility of about 24-40 m / 80-120 ft, Roatan becomes the ideal setting for such a sporting event. How fitting is it that this competition takes place in Honduras which in Spanish actually means depths!!

With these amazing athletes reaching depths of 120 meters / 400 feet while holding their breath close to four minutes, safety becomes an issue and thus all safety measures are taken into consideration and accounted for. This includes six trained safety divers, one safety scuba diver on site for counterbalance system backup, a traditional counter balance system with electric winch, one doctor/medic on the platform per line with complete first aid kit, automated defibrillator and emergency oxygen, four paramedics provided by the Roatan Red Cross, emergency evacuation boat on site, ambulance on land (3 minute boat ride from dive platform) and 15 minutes from emergency clinic and hyperbaric chamber, plus a high resolution sonar per competition line.
